FW Murphy Launches HelmView™ display, a Complete Dash Integration Product for the Marine Market
(Tulsa, OK – March 21, 2006) Murphy has announced a complete dash integration product that unites all critical engine and vessel data into a single electronic interface.
The new product – the HelmView display – integrates engines, generators, transmissions, GPS and NMEA devices into one central screen. “It provides full flexibility and standardization in one piece,” said Jinger McPeak, marine market manager at Murphy.
Product Features
The HelmView display can read and translate multiple protocols, and is compatible with all major gasoline and diesel electronic engines.
The product’s large VGA LCD flat screen was designed to be clearly read in direct sunlight. The additional screen space allows the user to access more simultaneous engine parameters, more detailed diagnostic messages and additional instructions on how to correct engine faults. It can operate without any mechanical changes from 6-32 VDC.
The HelmView display has three CAN inputs to integrate engines, generators, NMEA devices and GPS. “Instead of working with multiple instruments and tying them all together at the dash, manufacturers can combine their various engine components into a single, unified display,” McPeak said.
“The HelmView display offers the biggest, most detailed look into your engine and how it is operating at any given moment. It’s visually attractive, easy to read under extreme conditions and completely customizable,” said McPeak.
The display features rich full-color graphics, which can be fully customized to the manufacturer’s specifications – including logos, menus, colors and the on-screen instrumentation. “For larger orders, we can work at a partnership level to customize this display and our other products to meet a customer’s exact integration needs,” said McPeak.
The HelmView display is completely submersible and meets IP68 specifications. It is also fully plug and go with industry standard Deutsch connectors.
The HelmView display can also be panel mounted or gimbal mounted for maximum flexibility in design and installation.
Product Strategy
The compatibility across all major marine engine manufacturers is a key feature of the HelmView display. Engine manufacturers have historically made their instrumentation only compatible with their own engines, and boat builders had to modify their dashes based on what engine and instrumentation combination they were using, said McPeak. “With a standard HelmView display, these boatbuilders could standardize manufacturing, controls, training and support – while providing a high-tech product that is open to expansion and customization.
“This makes boatbuilding simpler, easier and less expensive, plus it provides a product that their sales force can demonstrate without extensive training or even reading the manual.”
McPeak says thet HelmView display is aimed at a wide range of vessels from smaller runabouts to cruisers and yachts. “Small runabouts have a need for a less-cluttered dash that eliminates gages and combines the most important features. But with the largest yachts, there is an expectation for more detailed information on multiple electronic systems. The HelmView display covers those needs across all sizes,” she said.
